The Counterparties page is where you manage the financial institutions in your portfolio — the entities your organization monitors for financial crime risk. Use this page to add new institutions, organize them into segments, review their risk ratings, and navigate to individual institution reports.

Navigate here using the Counterparties link in the main navigation bar.

Adding an institution

Click Add Institution to open a three-step window. The institution is created as soon as you finish the first step; the second and third steps enrich it with public information and documents. Closing the window after step 1 keeps the institution in your portfolio.

Add Institution form

Step 1: Add Institution. Provide at least the institution name and type. The LEI and BIC fields help EFI match the entity against public data sources — filling these in improves the accuracy of automated information retrieval.

Field Required Notes
Institution Name Yes The legal or commonly known name of the entity.
Institution Type Yes Financial Institution (FI), Non-Bank Financial Institution (NBFI), Corporate, Individual, or Regulator.
LEI No Legal Entity Identifier — a 20-character alphanumeric code. Helps EFI match against global registries.
BIC No Bank Identifier Code (SWIFT code). Improves matching for banks and financial institutions.
Aliases No Alternative names the entity trades or is reported under (former names, local-language names, abbreviations). Adverse media monitoring searches for these names as well as the main name, so add any alias that appears in the press. Use + Add Alias for each one.
Parent Institution No Start typing to search the Elucidate Index and pick a parent if this entity is a subsidiary. Leave empty to add directly to your main portfolio.

Step 2: Review Company Information. EFI searches for publicly available information about the new institution and shows what it found next to four editable fields: Full Legal Name, Company Website, Wikipedia, and Address. The panel on the right summarises the source (description, headquarters, founding year, subsidiaries where available). Correct anything that looks wrong, then click Next to save. If the address ends with a recognisable country name, EFI also sets the institution's country from it. When nothing is found you can still continue with the details you entered.

Step 3: Upload Files. EFI immediately starts looking for annual reports, policies, and other public documents for the institution. Suggested documents appear as a list with the source domain; open the link to check the content before ticking it, since a document's title may not reflect what it contains. Click Add N Selected Documents to attach the ticked ones. A document that fails to attach is marked Failed; download it yourself and upload it in the General Documents card below, which accepts PDF, TXT, and DOCX. For security reasons, files uploaded here cannot be downloaded again from EFI, so keep your own copy. Click Finish to open the new institution's report.

Searching the Elucidate Index

The Elucidate Index is the full set of institutions EFI knows about, not just the ones in your portfolio. Search it when you want to check whether an institution already exists before creating a new one, or to find a counterparty you are not sure is in your portfolio. Type a name, BIC, or LEI in the search box at the top of any page and press Enter, or click All search results in the Counterparties sidebar.

Search Elucidate Index

The results page shows how many institutions matched and lets you narrow them with the Location filter. Click an institution name to expand its details and use Go to Assessment to open its report. The Counterparties link in the sidebar takes you back to your portfolio view.

If nothing matches, use the Create Institution prompt. It returns you to the Counterparties page, where Add Institution starts the workflow described above.

Viewing institution reports

Click any institution name in the table to open its full report. The report includes risk themes, signals (adverse media findings), institution details, and supporting documents. The FinCrime Risk column shows the institution's current financial crime risk score (0–100 scale) when a report has been generated. Institutions without a generated report show a dash instead of a score.

The Trend column compares the latest quarter's average score with the previous quarter. A green up arrow means the score improved and a red down arrow means it declined; a dash means the change was within 5% and is treated as flat, or there is not yet enough scored history to compare. Hover over the arrow to see both quarterly averages. Institutions with no trend data show an empty cell.

The Signals column shows the count of adverse media signals detected for each institution. A count of 0 means screening ran but found no signals; a dash means no screening has been performed yet.

The Transactions column, where enabled for your institution, shows the number of transactions analysed for that counterparty in its most recent assessment, taken from the transaction data you submitted.

Subsidiaries are nested under their parent. A parent row shows an expander on the left; click it to list the subsidiaries beneath the parent, sortable on their own.

Scatter plot view

Switch the toggle from Table to Scatter plot to see your whole portfolio at once. Each point is a counterparty, positioned by its transaction volume (horizontal axis) and its EFI score or a chosen risk theme (vertical axis). Transaction volume comes from your portfolio assessment runs, so you must select at least one month first; the Months menu lists the months with a run.

Scatter plot view

Two dotted lines divide the plot into quadrants, with a count of counterparties in each: high or low volume against lower or higher risk. Because a higher EFI score means lower risk, points above the score line are the lower-risk group. The score line defaults to 50 and the volume line to the median volume of the points shown; change either value in Quadrant lines or drag the lines directly on the chart. Your thresholds are remembered for the next visit. Use Log volume when a few large counterparties squash the rest against the left edge, and Include self-assessment to add your own institution as a reference point. Export the chart as PNG or the underlying data as CSV.

Organizing counterparties into segments

Segments let you group institutions for easier management — for example, by geography (CEE, EMEA, LATAM), business line (EUR Clearing, USD Clearing), risk tier (Enhanced Monitoring), or relationship manager. Segments also control what your colleagues can see, so read the section on restricting access below before creating one.

To add institutions to a segment:

  1. Make sure no segment is currently selected (click All counterparties in the sidebar).
  2. Check the boxes next to the institutions you want to group.
  3. Click Add selected to segment and choose an existing segment or create a new one.

Institution selected with bulk actions

Institution administrators can also create an empty segment first with the New segment... link in the sidebar and fill it later.

To view a segment's members, click its name in the sidebar. The gear icon next to a selected segment lets you rename or delete it.

Segment filter active

If a segment is empty, the page displays step-by-step instructions for populating it.

Restricting who can see a segment

The segment window has an Access granted to list of the users at your institution who can view counterparty reports. Tick a user to grant them that segment.

Segment window with access list

This matters because segments define what non-administrator users can see. A user without the institution administrator role only sees counterparties that belong to at least one segment they have been granted: on the Counterparties list, in Portfolio Assessment, in Elucidate Index search results, and when opening a report. An institution that sits in no granted segment is invisible to them, and a user granted no segments sees an empty Counterparties list. Institution administrators are never restricted and are therefore not listed. Use Manage users and permissions... to change roles rather than segment membership.

Remove segment deletes the segment itself. The institutions stay in your portfolio, but users who only had access through that segment lose sight of them.

Removing institutions from a segment

When viewing a segment, select institutions using the checkboxes and click Remove from segment. Confirm with Yes in the window that appears. This does not delete the institutions from your portfolio — it only removes them from that particular segment grouping.

Filtering and sorting

The table supports sorting by Institution name, FinCrime Risk score, Trend, Transactions, and Signals — click the column headers to toggle sort direction. Use the Country column filter to narrow results by jurisdiction.

The BIC filter matches any part of a BIC, regardless of case: typing DEUT finds every BIC containing those letters. Add * as a wildcard to anchor the match, for example DEUT* for BICs starting with DEUT. Use the × in the filter box to clear it.

The Transactions filter takes a comparison (More than, Equal to, Less than) and a number. Equal to 0 is a quick way to list counterparties with no transactions in your submitted data.

When no institution matches the current filters, the table shows "We have not found what you are looking for." with a Clear filters button that resets all column filters at once. Use the items-per-page selector under the table to show more rows before paging.

The sidebar provides quick navigation between your full counterparty list and individual segments.
